Theatre Royal Plymouth
TRP is the largest and best attended regional producing theatre in the UK and leading promoter of theatre in the South West. With the advent of a £7 million Regeneration Project it was the perfect opportunity to take a fresh look at their strategy, brand and all communications across a variety of media channels. More+
TRP is an amazing and special place with a myriad of performances, activities and events on offer. At its heart the 1300 seat auditorium that can produce West End musicals through to opera and ballet; to a smaller experimental 175 seat theatre; café, restaurant, community performance space and, on a separate site, a production and learning centre known as TR2.
Despite its perceived success and all of these great assets, competition has become fierce, with the regions suffering from decreased funding streams. In the face of this, TRP were looking to; attract a more diverse audience whilst retaining their current groups, increase uptake of their outreach programmes, raise the profile beyond the South West and attract more funding bodies both private and public.
Spending considerable time at TRP the energy and dynamism of the space is palpable. The joy of seeing performances live where events unfold and change before your eyes is magical. The new visual language reflects TRP’s bold sense of adventure, ambition to connect with more audiences and the idea that your experience there is truly special. Vibrant elements converge and shifting planes of light twist and turn.
Our work required a very holistic and joined up approach due to the complexity of the regeneration project and collaborations with BAM and BDP. The outputs employed a wonderful diversity of skill sets and output of applications that included: the carpet and wayfinding, sculptural signage and illumination, video and animations, printed literature and tickets, restaurant and cafe materials all underpinned by comprehensive guidelines.
