Talawa has grown to become the most successful all black theatre company in the UK, if not throughout Europe. Our work has enabled Talawa to rediscover their powerful spirit through all elements of their brand, website and print. More+
Talawa was created in 1986 in direct response to the lack of creative opportunities for actors from minority ethnic backgrounds and the marginalisation of Black peoples from cultural processes at the time of the company’s inception.
Since then, Talawa have produced more than forty award-winning touring productions. This spans everything from Shakespeare to African classics, Oscar Wilde to new Black British work and Nobel-prize winning playwrights to high-voltage musicals.
The bespoke logotype was drawn to have movement, rhythm and energy which in turn emphasised the phonetics of the Jamaican Patois name, meaning “small but feisty”. The supporting elements of colour, typography and imagery are utilised to enhance the company’s boldness and positive outlook.
The immersive and cinematic website now gives Talawa the chance to really tell people about all they do. From building on their community work and showcasing new talent, to promoting engagement and teaching work, to castings, jobs and the chance for people to donate.
The website is now a destination for those interested in black theatre throughout the UK. Without a venue, it’s their shop window.
Marketing and Communications Manager, Sanjit Chudha says: "Our new brand and easy-to-use website enables us to express the Talawa spirit with better content and a more immersive experience for site users. We were impressed by the flexibility and openness Spy Studio displayed, taking on board our ideas and responding positively at all stages of the process. We’re really pleased with the results, they are a great team to work with."
